CRANIOSACRAL SYSTEM AND THERAPY Craniosacral system is relatively recently recognized physiological and functional system. It is a semi-closed hydraulic system contained within a waterproof elastic membrane (Dura Mater) of the skull and spinal column.  An important function of this system is the production, circulation and re-absorption of cranio-sacral fluid. The cranio-sacral fluid maintains the correct physiological environment in which the central nervous system develop and function. The production and re-absorption of the cranio-sacral fluid causes constant fluctuation, or rise and fall of the fluid pressure within the system. This volumetric accommodation can be palpated, extending and contracting in accordance to the changes in the pressure, approximately 6-10 times per minute (= craniosacral rhythm). Craniosacral therapy aims to release any existing – sometimes deeply hidden - tensions and traumas in the body. Problematic areas and stresses can be detected by analyzing the delicate rhythm of the system (symmetry, quality, amplitude, rate) in various parts of the body. Very light manipulation techniques will release tension even at cellular level, thus improving the form and function of the whole. Craniosacral therapy is based on findings through osteopathy (Dr A Still, M.D. 1874; Dr W G Sutherland, D.O. early 20th century); however, it can be said that Dr John E Upledger, D.O.OMM, has done the pioneering work for craniosacral therapy. He developed the methods and protocols that now are being used all over the world. The therapy is highly efficient with no harmful side effects as nothing is added to or cut off from this constantly renewing living body. Rebalancing craniosacral system enhances health and well-being in general by freeing the central nervous system to perform at its best, and it has been used successfully to relieve pain, illness and dysfunctions in many areas: · Migraines and headaches · Chronic neck and back pain · Stress and tension related disorders · Motor-coordination impairments · TMJ syndrome · Orthopaedic problems · Post-operative treatment, post-traumatic stress disorders · Chronic fatigue, sleeplessness · Learning disabilities, ADHD · Autism · Emotional traumas · Pre- and post-pregnancy issues
